Travelfusion's Social Media Officer, I manage all of our online marketing and presence on Twitter, Facebook, our blog and more. I love my job!

It’s been a while since we’ve featured any culinary adventures on our blog and a hungry stomach has me thinking of and remembering the different varieties of “street food” that I’ve sampled on my travels. Here’s a list of my favourite street foods that I’ve sampled around the globe with a quick description of what the foods tasted like along with a quick note about where I tasted them. I’d love to hear from you about your street food adventures.  What’s the best street food you’ve tried? The worst? Did any of your street food leave you feeling not so great the next day? Leave us a comment here or on Facebook!

Currywurst – Berlin

First up in our culinary tour around the world is the famous currywurst that is a popular street food in Germany but especially in Berlin. Consisting of a hot sausage smothered in ketchup/curry sauce, the currywurst has attracted quite a following and stands and food trucks are ubiquitous in Berlin. When I visited, it was a freezing late winter day and I revelled in trying a few different currywurst stands over the few days that I was there. The best one I tried was from Curry 36 which was packed and had a queue down the street, even though its a bit away from the city centre and I visited in mid-afternoon. The slightly sweet sausage and side of chips was the perfect remedy to the cold day and I quickly learned that I was in the right spot as it was well worth waiting for!

Smazeny syr – Prague

Inarguably artery-clogging, but undoubtedly delicious, the smazeny syr is a Czech mainstay and basically consists of fried cheese on a bun with a slathering of mayonnaise. I know, it sounds dreadful but it tastes of perfection, especially after a long night out sampling Czech beers. Smazeny syr stands are easy to find in Prague’s Old Town and I’d definitely recommend trying one, or splitting one with a friend!

Crêpes – Paris

It would almost be a crime to visit Paris and not enjoy a fresh, warm crêpe whilst strolling around the beautiful monuments and city centre. Though they come in many varieties, nutella and banana crêpes or butter and sugar crêpes are my favourites. If you don’t have a sweet tooth, try one of the many savoury varieties that are also a great way to have a meal on the go! A relatively inexpensive treat in an otherwise costly city, crêpes are a great snack to tide you over and reenergise you from too much wandering around. I’ve never really had a bad crêpe experience though be warned that the stands nearest to major tourist attractions tend to be pricier with no real increase in quality!

Philly Cheesesteaks – Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA

Though a relative newcomer to the international “street food” scene, the cheesesteak or “Philadelphia cheesesteak” has quickly become a mainstay in Philly street food.  Though there are many variations on the same theme, cheesesteak sandwiches usually consist of a sub roll filled with beef and some type of cheesy topping. South Philadelphia is the place to go to sample the best cheesesteaks and take advantage of the rivalry between Pat’s King of Steaks and Geno’s. I preferred Pat’s but there are plenty of Geno’s die-hard fans out there too!

So, what is your favourite street food? Have you tried any of the ones listed here? I’d love to hear from you!

Food carts have completely taken over Portland, Oregon USA! There are many theories as to why it happened, but for most people, the cost of opening a restaurant was way too high. Food carts allow for smaller staff, less overhead, and not as many taxes/regulations.

As for Smazeny Syr, I get my fix here from Tabor, the Czech food cart :)

And did you really go eat a Smazeny Syr after reading this post? I'm always happy to inspire culinary adventures….
