After featuring the far-flung Cook Islands in our last Island Escape post, we’re heading back a bit closer to home with the fabulous Mykonos Island in Greece. Not only is Mykonos wildly popular with tourists from Europe and beyond, but it also is one of the only spots on the list of top island escapes that I’ve had the good fortune to visit!

A true gem of Greece, the island has been inhabited since the 11th century, BC and is one of the most recognisable islands in the area because of its landmark windmills that dot the shoreline. When I visited, it was back in 1997 so its possible that things have changed since then, but I’ll never forget the hospitality that greeted me upon setting foot on the island for the very first time. It was July and though the sun was punishing at that time of the year, the Mykonos beaches offered perfect respite from the heat. I remember grabbing a lamb gyro sandwich at a small cafe and taking it with me as I began to explore the island on foot.

I wish I’d had a digital camera back then so that I’d have a gallery of my own photos of Mykonos to share with you. For now the images graciously shared by these Flickr users will have to do. It’s easy to see why Mykonos is one of Greece’s top tourist destinations – there’s no shortage of beauty and seaside charm!
