It’s that time of the year again – time for the annual “La Tomatina” food fight festival in the town of Buñol in the Valencia region of Spain. Every year, on the last Wednesday of August, party-goers descend upon the town for the food fight of the year, with the weapon of choice being large, overripe tomatoes! What started as a friendly food fight amongst neighbours in the 1940’s has evolved into a huge week-long festival culminating in the huge tomato fight from which the party takes its name.
Tradition dictates that women dress in white and men go shirtless, but this has evolved over the years into a more “anything goes” approach that leaves party-goers delighted and coming back for more. Though I’ve never been to the Tomatina festival, to be honest I’m not sure how well I would like it. As someone who is a bit wary of being dirty and also doesn’t love being in crowds, I think I’ll leave this one to others and just enjoy the fantastic photos from the events.
Have you been to La Tomatina? Are you planning to go? Plan ahead for next year by looking for flights on travelfusion.co.uk!
