Just south of the California border and along the coast of Mexico lies a little treasure of a town just waiting to be discovered.  Puerto Nuevo is one of my best kept secrets on the western coast of North America.

As a university student in San Diego, California one of the pastimes most enjoyed by my group of friends and fellow students was the day trip down to Mexico.  It was a simpler time back then, when passports were not required to cross the border and our pre-September 11 mindset meant that immigration checks were much easier than they are today.  Though things have changed in the past years and the border towns don’t sound to be as safe as they used to be, there is still something to be said about the day trip to Mexico.

Only 90 minutes from San Diego, the unassuming town of Puerto Nuevo is no more than a strip of buildings lining a dirt road to the edge of the Pacific Ocean.  In fact, visitors probably drive right by on their way to the more popular destinations of Ensenada and Rosarito Beach.

However, a true diamond in the rough, Puerto Nuevo is a place worth stopping and enjoying some of the best meals you may ever eat for a fraction of what you’d pay back in the U.S. or even in larger cities in Mexico.  Enjoy unlimited portions of fresh lobster with all the proper ingredients to make your own lobster burritos.  With huge bowls of beans and rice and some of the best margaritas I’ve ever tasted, Puerto Nuevo is one of those places seared in my memory that I can’t stop thinking about.

Most restaurants in this self-proclaimed “Lobster Village” provide ample outdoor seating with uninterrupted views of the Pacific.  Grab a seat, order up some local delicacies and relax, enjoying the seaside scenery while you’re at it.  Plan your visit in February or March and you’ll likely spot some grey whales on their migration path to lower Baja California.

Though now it’s true that care must be taken when traveling south of the US/Mexico border by vehicle, the memories of my trips to Puerto Nuevo and the good times I had there make me determined to visit again sometime soon!
