My Favourite Portuguese Cuisine

After spending 2 weeks in Portugal I came back to London happy as ever and decided to blog about our food, especially the kinds I miss the most. We eat a lot of fish in Portugal especially in the Algarve but we also have delicious meat dishes and desserts. Below are some typical dishes that will make you beg for more.
Arroz de Marisco

This is a stew made with different fish and seafood such as prawns, mussels, crab, clams, with onions, tomatoes and parsley. We eat this a lot in the summer, especially in the Algarve where the fisherman go to the sea at night and then sell the fresh fish in the morning market. If you go to the beach at night you can see tiny lights in the sea from the distant fisherman boats.
Cozido à Portuguesa

A dish made by my grandma almost every Sunday when I was little. It consists of basically different kinds of vegetables and meat boiled together and accompanied by white rice. My grandma boiled the rice with the water where the meat was cooked which gives it a delicious flavor. The ingredients are usually shin of beef, pork, chicken served with cabbage, carrots, turnips, Portuguese smoked sausages (morcela, farinheira and chouriço), rice, potatoes, and collard greens.

Codfish is one of the most eaten fish by us Portuguese. We don’t eat fresh codfish, our codfish is dried in salt and before being cooked it needs to be placed in water for 1 day and the water needs to be changed several times to remove the salt. This dish is one of the most popular ways to prepare codfish in Portugal and it’s very easy. It is made from thin strips of cod mixed with onions, and thin strips of fried potatoes bound together by eggs. To make it easier to prepare you can buy the potatoes ready and we call it “batata frita palha”.
Rissóis

These are a very popular snack that can be found in many cafes and house parties. Rissóis are a breaded pastry shaped in a half-moon usually filled with shrimp in béchamel sauce or with meat and then deep fried. Rissóis are usually eaten cold, as a snack or appetiser, but they can also be a main course usually served with rice and salad. Another similar snack are “pastéis de bacalhau” also deep fried but made with potatoes, codfish, eggs and parsley.
Arroz Doce

Is a typical and popular rice pudding which is present in every party and restaurants menu. It is often decorated with elaborate stenciled patterns of cinnamon powder. It’s delicious and it makes me miss home!
