Our Ten Best Places to Live series is continuing today with a spotlight on city number 7 on the list, Munich, Germany.

Germany’s third largest city, Munich has all kinds of great things to see and do and is an awfully fun city.  Though its been years since I’ve visited, here are a few highlights that I remember from my trip.

The people – friendly, warm and open, I had plenty of help with directions, smiling faces and good cheer in general, which is not something you find in every big European city.  Apparently crime is also quite low compared to other large cities in Germany, which factors in to the “liveability” score given to Munich in the Mercer study.

The views and scenery – fantastic, especially the old architecture and the open spaces.  I loved the Englischer Garten when I visited in the summertime for a place to relax and take in the scenery around me.

The culture – one of my best travel memories ever is the time I spent with my travel group in the Hofbrauhaus in central Munich (we were students just after graduation…imagine being the chaperone!).  An immense brewery and beer hall owned by the German government, the Hofbrauhaus was the perfect blend of authentic German culture, tourist kitsch and stereotype and the time I spent there was an amazing good time.

The architecture – the Marienplatz is Munich’s central town square and I remember being blown away by its beauty.  Erected in the 1600s to end the Swedish occupation of the area, standing on the Marienplatz can transport you instantly back in time as much of its old splendour has been preserved.  It’s easy to daydream about what it must have been like back in the old days.

Want to travel to Munich to see for yourself whether or not it looks like a good place to live?  Flights from London to Munich for a long weekend in late June start at £52 return.  From Dublin to Munich on the same weekend, flights start at £133.  Head to Germany to see how “liveable” Munich can really be!
