Our tour around the best cities in which to live continues today with a closer look at Frankfurt, Germany.

Officially called “Frankfurt am Main,” Frankfurt is the fifth largest city in Germany and is named for its location on the river Main.  The financial and transportation centre of Germany, Frankfurt is a busy commercial city that consistently ranks high on many different “most liveable places” lists.

Despite the fantastic job opportunities available in Frankfurt, the cost of living in this city is awfully high.  However, the cost has not dissuaded immigrants from choosing Frankfurt as home.  A very multicultural city, there are quite large immigrant populations in Frankfurt, including large groups from Turkey, Albania, Russia and others.  In fact, Frankfurt is home to the second largest Korean population in all of Europe.

This diversity and multiculturalism means that Frankfurt has plenty of international influences on its culture, and also results in fantastic choices for cuisine when in the city.  Also, plenty of interesting historical sites remain that add value and ideas for sightseeing and cultural experiences while there. Bartholomew’s Cathedral dates back to the 14th century and is one of Frankfurt’s most visited historical sites.

Frankfurt also hosts many different cultural festivals throughout the year, including the Museumsuferfest in August.  Museums are opened all night long and dancing, fireworks and merriment continue over the full three days of the festival.

Finally, Frankfurt is a great place to live for all the transportation options in the area.  The Frankfurt airport is a huge international hub, making all of Europe and beyond extremely accessible by air.  Also, rail travel is quick and easy from Frankfurt as well.

Flights to Frankfurt from the UK and Ireland are plentiful and inexpensive.  Fly from London to Frankfurt return for £24 in July.  Flights from Manchester to Frankfurt start at £127 for the same weekend and from Dublin to Frankfurt a bit less expensive with flights from £68 return.  Take this opportunity to see if you could envision yourself living here, in the 8th best place to live!
