Number nine on Mercer’s Best Places to Live list is Bern, Switzerland. A city that looks as though it’s been pulled directly from a storybook, Bern is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Located not far from the Bernese Alps, Bern is the fourth most-populated city in Switzerland but is still relatively small with 130,000 people. The old city centre nestled inbetween the banks of the Aare River is perhaps the most beautiful part of the city.
While the city’s beauty certainly makes it a great place to live, the low unemployment and plenty of job opportunities make it ideal for a place to live and work. Though the area changed hands frequently in history throughout the different wars that were fought in the vicinity, these influences probably also added to the cultural diversity of the city.
Tourism draws plenty of visitors to Bern, especially since it gained its UNESCO status in the early 1980s. Once home to Albert Einstein, Bern also attracts people who are interested in the Einstein museum and his old apartment where the theory of relativity was developed.
Fans of the outdoors will be delighted with the mountains and lakes surrounding Bern, offering plenty of opportunities to hike, explore and appreciate the natural landscape.
