The Chichen Itza archeological site is located on the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico. Built by the Mayans around the year 600, this site holds huge historic importance for Mexico and gives a glimpse into Mayan civilisation. It is thought that this site served as an altar for human sacrifices to the Mayan god of rain, due to the number of human remains found on the site. Many other artefacts have been found which help to tell the history of this fantastic site.
Tourism to Chichen Itza is quite high perhaps due to the fact that monuments of this kind are rarely seen in such good condition today. Visitors to Cancun can access Chichen Itza easily, which makes it popular for many visitors. The site’s status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World only help to boost its popularity as a destination.
