Nicknamed by some “the Capital of the World” and “the Eternal City,” Rome is not only beautiful but has been a popular travel destination for centuries!
An easy city break from the UK, Rome has so much to offer both first-time and repeat visitors, as well as a fantastic look back on Roman history and Rome’s influence on modern civilisation with many monuments still intact. The largest and most populous city in Italy, here’s a quick look of some of the must-see and must-do attractions in Rome.
Of course the Colosseum is one of Rome’s most famous monuments. Located right in the city centre, this amphitheatre is the largest ever built in the Roman Empire and was once used for gladiator shows and games. Although parts of the Colosseum have fallen and been damaged through the years, an astonishing majority of it still stands tall and gives a glimpse back into the glittering times of Rome’s past. This is one of the must-visits for anyone’s first time to Rome.

The Trevi Fountain or Fontana di Trevi is another must-see in Rome. A huge fountain that has been made famous in countless films, the Trevi Fountain is a beautiful Baroque fountain that sits at the junction of three important roads on the site of a vital aqueduct in ancient times. Legend has it that tossing a coin into the fountain will ensure a repeat visit to Rome in the future. Apparently nearly 3,000€ are thrown into the fountain each day, enough to subsidise a market for Rome’s needy population.

Another great thing to do in Rome is take your time over a leisurely trattoria lunch al fresco. With food options around nearly every corner and mouthwatering choices abound, there are plenty of places in Rome to eat, drink and be merry! Check out Spotted by Locals – Rome for dining tips from people who live in Rome, a good way to get off the beaten path and try a recommended restaurant. Of course, grabbing Gelato on the run is another fantastic way to enjoy local treats whilst exploring the city.

This is only scratching the surface of things to do on your visit to Rome, but a perfect list for those with just a day or two to explore the city. I’m hoping to visit this summer or fall and can’t wait to check back with more recommendations of my own!
