Today’s Travel Monday takes us to the beautiful city of Amsterdam in the Netherlands. One of my favourite European cities, Amsterdam is the perfect place for a quick city break from the UK and offers visitors plenty of things to see and do. Much more than the red light district, Amsterdam is a quaint and friendly place that I always enjoy visiting.
Inhabited since the 1200’s, Amsterdam has a mix of history and modernity that makes it an interesting place to visit and explore. Of course the canals that line the city are some of the first things to see. If the weather is nice, stroll along the canals and enjoy the sunshine. I love seeing the beautiful homes that line these historic waterways, wondering when the homes were built and how it must be to live there in such a picturesque setting.

The main mode of transport in Amsterdam is the bicycle. I’ve never seen as many cyclists as I did when visiting the city for the first time. That said, pedestrians should take care to not step into bike lanes or walk in areas established for cyclists, as many of them ride awfully fast! If you feel like getting around town more quickly, hire a bicycle from one of the many rental shops and see the city like a local.

Another canal-side attraction in Amsterdam is the Anne Frank House, located on the Prinsengracht. This museum was my favourite visit in the city, and is an amazing look into World War II in Amsterdam. The secret annex where Frank and her family hid from the Nazis for years is open for visits and offers a chilling look into what life must have been like for the Frank family and countless others during this difficult period. The museum is definitely worth a visit.

The architecture in Amsterdam is unique and the colourful houses are different from any others that I’ve seen on my travels. I love grabbing a big paper cone of fresh french fries with any number of different sauces at one of the many fry shops in the city and walking along trying to spot houses that seem to get even cuter as I go.

Of course the Van Gogh and Rijksmuseums are fantastic places to visit and spend time, especially if the weather isn’t great. Located quite close to one another, hit both in one day and soak in as much culture as you can whilst enjoying this fantastic city!

Trips to Amsterdam are relatively quick and easy from the UK. Fly from London to Amsterdam for a long weekend in July for only £52 return! Flights from Liverpool to Amsterdam are £51 return, and from Birmingham to Amsterdam from only £40 return the same weekend. With prices these low, why not book today?
