As regular readers can attest, I’ve got something of an obsession with street art. I love nothing more than wandering the streets of a new city, and looking out for the next masterpiece around the corner. Imagine my excitement in combining two of my favourite things – Barcelona and street art!
A fabulously fun city by the sea, Barcelona is one of those places that felt magical the first time I stepped out onto its streets. With gorgeous weather, smiling residents and plenty of things to see and do, this is a city I plan to return to again and again for visits.
Here’s a look at some great examples of Barcelona street art. Have you seen any yourself?
I love the vivid colours of this smiling skull, along with his message of “love!”

This Picasso-esque piece painted on a security grate seems particularly fitting, as an homage to one of Barcelona’s most famous residents.

This colourful mural on the side of a building is especially wild and wonderful. I’m not sure what “Frikerhill” means or where it is, but if the trees are this scary, I don’t need to go there.

This ephemeral little nymph was painted at the bottom of a wall in the city. I love how the only word next to her is “Diva!”

I think this one is my favourite of the ones I’ve collected for today’s post. The little beetles look so determined to save their friend from the awfully scary and strange-looking Chupacabra, a legendary goat-eating creature about which tall tales are spun in Latin America.

This haunting portrait is also painted on the side of a building. His eyes are piercing and I especially love the dripping paint, as though this piece was made quite quickly.

Finally, I had to include this little guy as he reminded me so much of the Space Invaders that I love so much in Paris. He looks bewildered – or perhaps he’s had a bit too much sangria and sunshine?

If you’d like to explore the streets of Barcelona yourself to see which fabulous pieces of street art you can spot, take a trip there for a long weekend this summer. Return flights from London to Barcelona in late June start at £67. Flights from Manchester to Barcelona start at £146, from Birmingham to Barcelona from £103 and from Edinburgh to Barcelona from £113 for the same weekend. With prices this low, treat yourself to a city break this summer and enjoy all the street art, tapas and sangria that you can!
