Our quest to find the most interesting street art takes us to Asia today, with a closer look at Tokyo, Japan and the art that can be found in the streets there.  As we’ve seen in our previous posts on Amsterdam, London, Berlin and Paris, street art can be as diverse and interesting as the residents of a city.  With such a wide variety of interesting artistic expression, I’m excited to today focus on a major city in Asia for the first time.  Let’s see what the streets of Tokyo have to offer.

Hygiene problems?  This purple mouth baring green teeth would definitely come as a surprise upon turning a corner!

This is the side of the Tokyo Design Academy building.  A school in existence for over forty years, this Tokyo mainstay offers students degrees in design, creative arts and many other different specialties.  Looks like they also offer them the opportunity to practice on the side of the building!  I love this one!

This funky cow statue was a part of the Cow Parade travelling art exhibit that has visited many different major cities around the world.  Coming through Tokyo in both 2006 and 2008, these fibreglass cow sculptures popped up throughout the city and each were designed by different local artists.  This “milk cow” is especially unique and interesting.

This building side is colourful and fun – the use of all the different blues make it seem whimsical and marine-like while also picturing hibiscus-like flowers that evoke a tropical feeling. However it makes you feel, it’s a gorgeous use of colour and must liven up the block on which its located.

Of course street art also offers the opportunity to make a more serious, political or philosophical statement.  Check out the contrast between this smiley cartoonish stencil and the message “You Are What you Buy” and “Ignorance is Strength.”

Another politically charged street art piece, this one shows Japanese war planes and ships, along with a traditional ninja warrior in the corner.  Perhaps a nod to traditional versus modern warfare, or just a contrast between different fighting methods, this one uses an interesting mix of colours and imagery.

Finally, this crazy skull image makes me smile for some reason.  Perhaps it’s the way it peeks out from an otherwise boring and plain wall, or the way it’s asking “What?!”  In any case it’s a welcome surprise on an otherwise normal-looking street.

Why not spend a week exploring Tokyo’s street art yourself this summer?  Return flights from London to Tokyo are only £480 for a trip this June.
